Today my blog topic will be about Lakota Culture and learning some of their basic words. The first word I’ll be teaching you how to say is "grandma", they say unci. My unci is coming to town. That is a fun way to say grandma. Another word in Lakota is Mato meaning bear in English. I came across a mato in the forest. If anyone has a cat the way Lakotas say cat is Igmu. Look at that beautiful grey Igmu. Final word of the day is eagle which means Wambli. I saw some wamblis soaring today.
Here are some easy words to practice and remember Bear-Mato Cat-Igmu Grandma- unci Eagle- wambli Lakota is a beautiful language and culture. It’s interesting learning the language. I am excited to learn more Lakota words and share them with you all. Fun fact: many tribes considered whites neither friends nor enemies. Some thought they were superior people because of their advanced technology and some considered them inferior because of their impolite and incomprehensible behavior. This is stated in American Indian Treaty Making: Motives and Meanings by Raymond J. Demallie. We can get into some interesting historical stories. I will try my best to share a piece of history with you all, things you have not been taught in school. Facts and truth about the way the natives were treated and how land was divided, how tribes broke off in to different areas making them reservations today and what happened to their broken culture and why it has been suppressed. More words that I’d like to share: Earth-Maka Sky-Skan Rock-Inyan The buffalo God-Ta Tanka The bear God- Hu Nonp I find the language fascinating. I want to become fluent in this way of speaking. If I can help teach this language to everyone and our family’s then I will try my best to spread it on. The Language is dying and it makes me sad to think that our history and ancestors culture is becoming absolute. I am very intrigued to share this information with everyone. Thanks for checking out my blog. I can’t wait to share more about my ancestors' history with you all. |
